If Golems are mechanical constructs used to protect certain sites and act as guardians for arcane users, then War Golems are there much more advanced desendents. What is known about them is that they were mass produced on a grand scale and deployed during the Dark war, and that they are highly advanced mechanical constructs. Although soulless in nature, their minds and purpose are usually also more complex than regular golems, and some could even make their own rudementary decisions based on battlefield conditions.
Early War Golems were nothing more than blunt force instruments of destruction, but as the escalating Dark War pushed war magitechnology forward, they evolved into more precise weapons. Many histories consider War Golems to be the ultimate fusing of Magic & Technology, as many different fields of study were required to create them.
Towards the end of the dark war, because of their lethal effectiveness, the resources & factories used in their manufacture became high priority targets – so much so that the method of creating them has been lost. There are a few surviving War Golems however. The city of Waypoint recently discovered several deactivated ones that were stored in order to protect the city although this is not common knowledge yet. A command interface is apparently used to activate and control them. It is rumored that Citadell, in the country of Sigal has several working War Golems as well.
Most historians are baffeled by the complete lack of knowledge pertaining to these creations, and many suspect that the information has been specifically targeted in order to erase that knowledge from history. Some blame the Cult of Cignar for this destruction of knowledge.
